In just over eight decades, the Catch-A-Calf Contest has awarded nearly 3,000 steers to 4-H members from Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming.
“This year at the 85th National Western Stock Show Catch-A-Calf Contest, there are 38 exhibitors,“ Clancy Anderson, past Catch-A-Calf exhibitor and current National Western staff member says.
The program is designed so exhibitors catch a calf at the National Western. For the next year, participants feed and take care of the calf to successfully return with the animal to be exhibited as a market steer.
When the participants and steers return to the National Western, they are both judged on different factors. The exhibitors are judged on their record book, a personal interview and showmanship. Additionally, the market animals are judged on fitting quality, quality of carcass and rate of gain.
“The Catch-A-Calf contest provides an experience for exhibitors that cannot be found anywhere else,” Anderson says. “These kids walk away from the program learning more about time management, hard work and the fine details of raising a beef animal for market.”
