Last weekend, 40 4-H and FFA members traveled to Denver to meet their sponsors and pick up their calves at the 2016 Catch-A-Calf Breakfast. Participants from four different states including Colorado,Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming were given Hereford calves weighing an average of 825 pounds. Throughout the next eight months, exhibitors will write monthly letters to their sponsors, updating them on the progress of their calves and experience in the program in addition to keeping current on their record books.
During the first weekend of the 2016 National Western, the participants will bring their finished calves back to Denver, turn in their record books, complete an interview with a panel of judges and give a brief speech reflecting their overall experience within the program. After they exhibit their calves in showmanship and market classes, an overall score is tabulated and awards are presented. The top two participants are invited to sell their calves in the Junior Livestock Auction, which takes place during the last weekend of the National Western each year. Soon after the conclusion of the National Western, participants are given premium checks in return for selling their calves and taking part in the program.
We wish the best of luck to all of these exhibitors and appreciate the long-time support of all of the sponsors and volunteers it takes to make this program possible.
